Brouwerij Noordt founder receives royal recognition

The Rotterdam craft beer scene reached a prestigious milestone yesterday as Peter Rouwen, the visionary founder of Brouwerij Noordt, was honored with a royal recognition making him a member of the Order of Oranje Nassau. This distinction serves as a testament not only to his mastery of brewing but to his unwavering commitment to both the Rotterdam and the Dutch beer culture. To understand the significance of this honor, one must look back at the journey that led to the stainless steel tanks on the Zaagmolenkade.

The path to the mash tun: Life before Noordt

Long before he was known as one of the faces of Rotterdam’s “No-Nonsense” brewing movement, Peter Rouwen was deeply embedded in the hospitality industry. He spent years honing his palate in the restaurant world. This “flavor-first” perspective would later define the Noordt philosophy – creating beers that are balanced, technical, and designed to pair perfectly with food. Peter was one of the early pioneers in the Netherlands to bridge the gap between brewing and sommelier-level expertise, which led to him founding the first accredited brewing course in The Netherlands together with Lentiz and Stibon. Even in his early career, Rouwen was known for his collaborative spirit. He didn’t just want to drink great beer; he wanted to elevate the entire Dutch beer culture, moving it away from mass-produced pilsners toward artisanal quality.

The birth of Brouwerij Noordt

In 2015, the dream of a dedicated space for Rotterdam brewing became a reality. Peter founded Brouwerij Noordt in a former fire station in the Old North (Oude Noorden) neighborhood. While many craft breweries in the mid-2010s were chasing extreme bitterness or high alcohol content, Peter steered Noordt in a different direction. He championed drinkability and technical perfection. Noordt is well-known for their IPLs (India Pale Lagers), which combine the crispness of a lager with the aromatic hop profile of an IPA. The “Noordt Experience” (NXP) is their experimental line. One of their greatest successes, the Simcoe Porter, actually started as an NXP experiment and became an award winning beer that is now part of their core range. The brewery has a taproom, a lovely big space providing a good view of the fermentation tanks.

Celebrating 65 years: a beer road trip

The timing of the royal recognition added an extra layer of magic to an already milestone year, as the presentation of the “lintje” coincided perfectly with Peter’s 65th birthday festivities. Surrounded by friends, family, and Noordt fans, the celebration reached its peak when his inner circle surprised him with a gift perfectly suited to a man who has spent his life chasing the perfect pint: an epic beer road trip. This well-deserved vacation will allow Peter to step away from his own kettles for a moment and travel across borders to further explore (and enjoy) the wonderful world of beer.
